well our bargain 144S has turned out to be a rusty write-off, so i am plannign to make the best of things by taking the parts that will suit my car as spares. Can anyone tell me what bits off a 1971 144S will suit a 1967 122S? I am definitely taking the motor and 'box as they seem to eb in great condition, is the box the same? diff? are the springs the same or will they fit? they seem somewhat stiffer on the 144S. anything else i should think about?

The engine is a straight swap, no problems. No worries about the alternator either - when I converted from dynamo to alternator nobody told me that Volvo put the alternator on the dizzy side, so it never occurred to me to do anything other than put it on the manifold side same as the dynamo. The direct-change and remote-change gearbox lids are also interchangeable. The very last Amazons had the 140-pattern propshaft and rear axle but I think if you swap you have to swap everything.

If its a disc brake back axle it will not fit as the prop is different to all Amazons, if its a drum brake it will fit but the wheels still have a different stud pattern. I thought the radiator would fit, even though, with it having a remote header tank, it will not be 'right' for the earlier Amazons. The steering box is same as the 1800E and ES so needs alteration to the column to fit an Amazon - not worth it. So if the engine isn't needed why bother at all.

thanks guys, i recon i may still put the engine and 'box aside, seems worthwhile if they are simple to install, I shall just stack them in the shed as spares should anything catastrophic happen to my engine or 'box unexpectedly i will have a spare layign around that i can put in temporarily whilst rebuilding the original, no point me tryign to find a 140 enthusiast, this car sat on the local volvo club website classifieds for 3 months at $100 before we took it, but we have a good local volvo wreckers who does all the classics, so at least the parts will end up back in good use eventually. I was amazed how much bigger the 140 feels then the 122S and how much stiffer it sat on the road. sorta surprising how much difference there is in the 2 cars, i figured it must have been more closely related, and that the 240 must have been the big step.
